How to Maintain a Healthy Smile During Summer

Summer is officially here, and we know many of our lovely patients are looking forward to enjoying the great outdoors and spending some well-earned time relaxing with friends and family. Summer is frequently a busy time, and normal routines can go out of the window, making it easy for dental health to take a back seat. However, the warmer weather can take its toll on oral health, so we have put together some easy-to-follow tips to ensure your smile remains in great shape this summer.

  1. Keep hydrated with water, as it is the best beverage for quenching thirst. Try to steer clear of fizzy drinks, especially sports drinks that are often laden with sugar. Fruit juices are also a poor choice for dental health as they are high in sugars. It is far better to eat the whole fruit, especially when more fruit is in season at this time of year. If you drink alcohol, remember that it can dehydrate you and aim to drink a large glass of water between each alcoholic beverage.
  2. Do you have sunscreen for your lips? The skin on your lips and around your mouth is thinner and more sensitive to sunlight. Most people are pretty good at wearing sunscreen with a high SPF but will often forget to protect their lips. Choose a good quality lip balm that will help seal in moisture and with an SPF of at least 15.
  3. There’s nothing like a tall glass of water over ice cubes to cool you down but resist the temptation to crunch on ice cubes. An ice cube is hard enough to crack or chip your tooth enamel, causing problems with tooth sensitivity and requiring restorative dentistry in Newcastle.
  4. Try to avoid snacking on sweet treats like ice cream or other ice-cold deserts, even though these are very tempting on a hot summer’s day. Unfortunately, they tend to be laden with sugar, encouraging tooth decay. When you want a sweet treat, have it as part of a main meal and try to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water afterwards to wash away excess sugars before they can harm your teeth.
  5. Are you or your family participating in summer sports this year? Many people do but will fail to wear a properly fitting mouthguard. A blow to the mouth can chip, crack or even knock out a tooth or damage your jaws, causing pain and discomfort and potentially a lifetime of dental bills. If you love to play sports, come and see us here at West Bowmanville Family Dental so we can fit you for a custom sports mouthguard. Our dental mouthguards in Clarington are super comfortable to wear, provide maximum protection, and come in various colours.
  6. If you are going away or are likely to stay overnight, don’t forget to pack a dental kit, and it’s a great time to have a new start using a brand-new toothbrush so that you can pack the kit well ahead of time. Finding your preferred brand of toothbrush or toothpaste while away can be awkward and waste valuable vacation time. Don’t forget to pack dental floss to clean between your teeth thoroughly.
  7. If you have kids, the summer holidays are a great time to get up-to-date with dental checkups before the new school begins or before you go on vacation. Get in touch with us to schedule your checkups and dental cleanings in Courtice, or complete any recommended dental treatments.
