We often get asked by patients why their gums could be sore or bleeding when they brush. Sometimes the pain and discomfort by the gums may even feel like a toothache or worse !
Some common causes of sore gums include diet, lifestyle and home care.
The health of your gums and teeth depends on proper dental care. The gums and jaw bone are the foundation for strong and healthy teeth. For that reason, gum care at home meaning brushing twice a day(night and in the morning) and regular check-ups (recommended twice a year cleanings by professional) will ensure that your teeth stay strong and healthy.
Periodontal care(care for your gums) is the foundation for your general health as the mouth is the gateway to the body.
Sore gums or pain in the gums is a sign that there are problems developing below the roots. Plaque can build up over time and this triggers an immune response causing inflammation around the gums. This inflammation of the gums causes pain, bleeding and sore gums. If this is left for a long period of time, then the bacteria can travel to other parts of our body and organs.
When plaque is allowed to accumulate on teeth due to a lack of home care or regular dental visits, then the gum tissue starts to get sore and inflamed. Inflammation is a natural response by the body and some typical signs include swelling, redness and pain. When patients typically brush or floss the area they may experience bleeding.
With time, pockets can develop which makes it easier for food and debris to collect under the gum. This becomes a cycle where the deeper pockets leads to more inflammation leading to even deeper pockets.
Incorrect use of a toothbrush including aggressive brushing or use of toothpicks can also damage the gum tissue.
In addition, other factors such as tobacco use, chemotherapy, and hormonal changes have also been linked to sore gums. But in most cases, poor dental care is to blame.
Good brushing techniques including flossing can help reduce the soreness of the gums. Taking your time to go around all surfaces of your teeth and ensuring you spend at least 2 minutes. Circular motions are the best for reaching all areas. The scrub brushing technique (back and forth) can damage the gum tissue and cause gum recession.
