How to get whiter teeth

- Fruit juice may seem healthy and full of vitamins and nutrients, is also high in acid and sugar levels.   The following image illustrates the sugar content of some common items.Fruit juices versus Soda

-Other foods that may seem healthy but have a high acid content can be a problem for your mouth.  Acidic foods can cause sensitive teeth and wear of your enamel over time. Some examples include grape fruits or consuming oranges.  Often we recommend not brushing right away after acidic items are eaten so as to not cause the acids to be directly applied on the root surfaces.  We do recommend drinking water and sugar free gum after such items are eaten.

-Sports drinks are another culprit of high acid and sugar content that can cause decay and stain your teeth.  Bananas, water and proteins before working out are recommended instead.

-Certain foods and drinks have strong pigments that can stain your teeth.  For example, tea, coffee and soda can cause staining in the cracks and pits of the enamel of your teeth.  Over time this can cause your teeth to look yellow and it is very difficult to remove without chemical treatment such as zoom whitening or in office bleaching.

-Use of a straw and sipping on a drink over a period of time can stain and cause cavities.  If the straw is kept at the back of the mouth it can prevent the fluids from washing slowly on your teeth and causing stains and cavities.
