How do we choose the colour of dental crowns?

We often get patients asking about the colour match of their new crowns on dental implants and also on natural teeth. The process is explained next.

Before & After Dental Implant Treatment BowmanvilleWith age, our teeth start to get more yellow. Ever wonder why that is? Age may cause certain stains to show more prominently on your teeth. The inner parts, or the dentin, of teeth becomes yellower as you age. You also begin to lose the outer enamel. Because of this, the yellowed dentin shows through the outer enamel to give the appearance of yellow teeth. If you are in need of dental implants or crowns, we want to match the teeth that are existing in the mouth, otherwise your smile will not look correct.

There are ways to match the colour of new teeth so that it looks more youthful. We will analyze how it is performed next.

How to select the right colour

Dental Implant crowns and crowns on natural teeth can be made in different shades. Its important to understand that whiter is not better. The teeth shade chosen needs to be appropriate to the age of the patient so that it also does not look unnatural. We often recommend to patients that teeth whitening procedures such as Zoom whitening are performed prior to final shade selection. This should happen for three to four weeks prior so we can get a baseline match.

One mouth, different colors

At times, whether due to existing dental work like old fillings or crowns, or stains, you may find that there are teeth with a variety of shades in your mouth which can make the process of shade selection more difficult.

For example, the canine teeth or eye teeth are usually more yellow in colour as they tend to have a thicker inner layer (dentin) which is naturally more yellow. The front teeth tend to be more translucent and brighter as the dentin layer is thinner. The molars or back teeth tend to be a shade in between. If you are in need of dental crowns, veneers or dental implants then we will always try and customize a shade that matches the adjacent tooth space.

Custom shading of your teeth

For certain cases, especially if we are replacing a single tooth, we often will get custom shading done. This is a combination of photos and consultation at the lab of choice where the intrinsic details of adjacent teeth can be analyzed so that we can create a new tooth that is in harmony with the rest of your dentition. We want to have a result that is not only aesthetic for your dental implants but natural for your mouth.

We recommend a consultation with our dentist team to discuss your dental implant, crowns and veneer needs. Picking the right choice for you is an art, and we want to make sure that we spend the time to ensure you are happy.
