Dental Implant “overdentures” explained

We often get patients at our office with loose denture problems. This is a very common problem as the jaw bone starts to shrink over time underneath the denture or the clasps “hooks” that hold a partial denture in place start to loosen.

Believe it or not, traditional dentures can be made firm with support from a number of dental implants. At our office this is a very common procedure that allows you to regain that comfort and confidence with your dentures again. Dental implants allow you to have a secure denture without any movement or wobble. Say goodbye to messy pastes and dental adhesives !

3) The alternative using metal clasps

The illustration above shows a typical case using four dental implants that allow for the denture to be snapped in out of the mouth. Typically we would need ugly metal hooks like in the picture above to retain this denture. The dental implants act to keep the denture firm in place without the need for those hooks which over time can damage your other teeth ! This is a very good alternative that we provide for many patients at West Bowmanville Family Dental with great results !

With four to six implants this is an extremely stable option that is a big improvement over a regular denture. Often if cost is a big factor this will be good middle of the road solution for many patients.

The alternative to snap in dentures is something called a ‘fixed’ bridge. A fixed bridge is not removable. The removable overdenture as shown above has the dental implants ‘snap’ in and out of your mouth almost like buttons on your shirt. We can often use your existing denture if it fits well and convert it so it has support from the attached dental implants !

So how many dental implants are enough to hold the denture in place? There are some basic rules that we follow. For example the top jaw has softer bone than the lower , so to compensate for this we increase the number of dental implants needed.
