Causes of sensitive teeth

We all have experienced tooth sensitivity at some point.  It can be caused by drinking a big glass of cold water on a hot day but for some people, the sensation can be painful.

Our teeth are naturally insulated by an outer shell called enamel, and underneath it is the dentin layer.  The dentin layer when it becomes exposed can cause tooth sensitivity.  Some examples of dentin exposure could be to receding gums from brushing too hard.

Our roots are not naturally covered by hard enamel like the top of the tooth.  Inside of our teeth there are thousands of tiny tubes that lead to the centre of the tooth where the nerve is located.  The nerve controls sensation of the tooth.  When anything hot, cold or sweet touches the tooth it can trigger a painful sensation.Sensitive Teeth Treatment

There are other reasons for sensitive teeth, not just receding gums.  These include:

Brushing too hard– This is a gradual process but using a hard-bristled toothbrush and applying too much pressure will wear your enamel and gums.  It is recommended to use a soft-bristled toothbrush unless specifically recommended otherwise.

Gum disease-The root surface of your gums will become exposed if you have gum disease.  Receding gums can contribute to tooth sensitivity.

Cracked teeth-Chipped or broken teeth allow bacteria to get closer to the nerve of the tooth and produce inflammation making your tooth more sensitive. If you suffer from a broken tooth it is recommended to be seen right away to reseal the tooth before causing further problems.

Bruxism-Teeth grinding also known as bruxism is a process that can happen at night without realizing it.  Clenching and grinding your teeth wears down the protective enamel layer and causes exposure of the dentin which can make your teeth sensitive.

Whitening products-Baking soda and peroxides in teeth whitening products and strips can cause sensitivity due to the bleaching effect.

Acidic foods and sugars-Certain fruits and certain drinks have a high acid and sugar content.  These foods can cause enamel wear and increase the chance of teeth sensitivity.

Mouthwash use-If you overuse mouthwashes, the acidic content can make your teeth sensitive.  Regular use is ok, but overuse can contribute to sensitivity.

Dental procedures-Regular dental procedures can temporarily increase your tooth sensitivity. The sensitivity will go away generally in a few weeks but it is not uncommon after a filling procedure or cleaning to experience some sensitivity.
