What is a CT scan for dental implants?

CT scans also known as cat scans are used in cases of complex dental implant procedures or where there have been teeth missing for a number of years. A CT scan allows us to see your jaw in 3D. Regular dental x-rays taken at the dental office are 2D and are good for seeing things like cavities and basic every day procedures. Regular dental x-rays tell us how tall the bone is, but it can’t tell us how wide the bone is. CT scans also allow us to plan a case ahead of time so we know which implant sizes and in which areas they will be placed while avoiding important anatomy, sinus areas, nerves etc. When you arrive for your dental implant consultation in Bowmanville, we may request a CT scan if your case requires it. We invite you to come in to discuss how we can help improve…

What is the “best” dental implant?

Did you know that there over 140 different dental implant companies that manufacture dental implants in the world. Are all dental implants the same? What makes one “better” than another and what sets the price point for a dental implant in Bowmanville? A dental implant replaces the root portion of the tooth. All dental implants that come in two pieces (the root part under the gum, and the crown or cap part above the gum) are made of titanium and some are a combination of a titanium alloy. So do all dental implants work the same? We like to use at our office a dental implant that has a good track record in use with long term studies that show success. Most dental implants used now involve very similar surface treatments which allow new bone to grow against the dental implant to make it nice and strong to take your…

Cost of dental implants

So how much do dental implants cost? this is the most asked question that we hear at our Bowmanville dental office. I am a big advocate for dental implants as they have revolutionized how we perform dentistry at our office. We can save healthy teeth and replace missing teeth where other options before relied on anchorage or support in the form of dentures or bridges. If we are looking at an apples to apples comparison, a single tooth implant at our office costs less than a three unit bridge (involving two teeth) . That is because the lab costs associated with a bridge are actually more expensive since it involves three teeth. We replace missing teeth for a single space to larger cases involving the whole mouth. When we replace the whole mouth, we do not need one implant for every missing tooth. We use a number of dental implants…

Your gums, teeth and dental implants

Gum health is important to the maintenance of your teeth and dental implants. The gum tissue acts like a protective turtle neck that helps to keep bacteria at bay. Did you ever notice that your gums may be receding so that you can see the spacings between the teeth? This little protective piece of gum tissue shaped like a triangle is called a papillae. The bigger your smile, the more important it is to preserve the gum tissue between your teeth and dental implants for it to look realistic. There are techniques to preserve as much gum and bone tissue at the time of dental implant placement such as the “immediate dental implant” technique which is a dental implant placed at the same time of tooth removal. Is age a factor for dental implants?

We often get asked about dental implants and what age a patient may receive dental implants. On the one hand, when a patient is too young, the jaw bone is still in development so we will wait until growth has stopped for replacement option of teeth. When an older patient is seeking dental implant treatment, it really has more to do with health factors rather than age. Age is not a limiting factor for dental implant treatment at our Bowmanville dental office. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth removed, you most likely are healthy enough for dental implants. We have successfully placed dental implants up to their mid 70-80’s as long as they are healthy. While there are certain conditions that may complicate or prohibit dental implant treatment, this can be determined at your consultation visit to examine your dental and medical history. For your free dental…
